Generating new knowledge is the foundation upon which we build our future. In order to sustainably preserve our high social and ecological standards as well as economic wealth, constant innovations based on successful research are necessary.

This huge responsibility that scientists bear for our society is reflected by a special responsibility of the state. It is the government’s duty to provide the best infrastructure possible for researchers. This is why Bavaria promotes the whole range of research programmes, in humanities and social sciences, in life sciences as well as in natural sciences and engineering.

Bavaria’s research landscape is diverse and enjoys an excellent national and international reputation. Consequently, it is necessary to strengthen and defend this position in the ever fiercer competition for the best ideas and concepts. Research in Bavaria is performed at 75 universities and non-university research facilities. The universities form the core of this research system. They are essential to interdisciplinary dialogue across all subjects; they represent the unity of research and teaching and provide first-rate education for young academics and scientists.

Activities of universities range from basic and applied research to exploring the great social challenges like health, climate change, demographics, energy and mobility. Universities of applied sciences focus particularly on applied research and development. They are important partners to small and medium-sized businesses and contribute substantially to keeping Bavarian economy innovative and competitive.
